Bio
DJ Skwint began DJing in 1998 due to his love for Hip Hop music and the desire to be involved in the culture. Within five years Skwint had become one of the top competitive DJ’s in the U.S. competing in several national finals competitions including being crowned Scribble Jam Champion, DMC US Supremacy Runner up as well as two DMC US Finals appearances. Skwint’s stint as a battle DJ landed him in articles by major newspapers such as the Washington Post, magazines such as DC based InnerLoop, as well as TV appearances on stations such as Fox Sportsnet.
Skwint’s status as a competitor has enabled him to become a sought after performer, playing festivals and clubs across the Midwest and West Coast for as many as 5000 people. Skwint’s unique talent has landed him high profile gigs such as Techno Tribal (Harmony Festival), which featured the likes of the Grammy Reggae Band Steel Pulse, as well as being the Earthdance mainstage DJ. Skwint has opened for acts such as Slick Rick, Steel Pulse Rahzel, Ja Rule, Chali Tuna, Collie Buddz, Lyrics Born, Brass Bows and Beats, Beatjunkies, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Eydea and Abilities, Cannibol Ox, Murs, DJ Vadim, Mountain Brothers to name a few.
Yet, what makes Skwint unique is his dedication to a daily meditation practice as well as his travels to foreign lands such as India and China. This has helped mold Skwint into one of the most well rounded DJ’s on the west coast blending his hip-hop scratching background with global beat flavors. Skwint’s sets feature a wide range of genres including world electronica, hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, house, turntablism and many others.

“Last summer, for example, DJ Skwint (aka Brandon Au) finished third in his “home” regional in Chicago. A few weeks later, the University of Iowa student entered the Denver regional, where he also finished third. “Last year, I didn’t feel like I was ready to win, but performing inspired me and gave me more motivation, Au says. For 2003, he continued practicing — sometimes up to four or five hours a day — and formulated a plan. “I wanted to do two regionals this year,” Au explains. I wanted to do one before Chicago to practice. I was going to do Atlanta, but it was canceled, so I decided to come to D.C. I know people here. What was supposed to be a warm-up gig became Au’s ticket to the U.S. finals, as he turned in a clean set of hip-hop mixing.”
